Nothing brings me more joy than a weekend camping trip, a jaunt down to the nearby city, or even visiting family across state lines. But I’ll also take any holiday weekend I can for a trip to some vacation destination within 2-5 hours of my home via plane.

And what I’ve found is that no getaway is complete (or even possible, really) without a weekender duffle bag.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
  • Sized for a weekend: A weekender bag will be smaller than your average duffel bag (usually in the 20 to 30-liter range), sized to fit just enough clothes and gear for a long weekend. For extended trips, consider a larger bag.
  • Carry-on everywhere: Carry-on size restrictions will change from airline to airline, but your average weekender bag is sized small enough to carry onto any aircraft.
  • Built for travel: Whatever type of getaway you have planned—a Vegas trip with the guys, a tour of Napa Valley vineyards, or an escape to a resort—you’ll find a weekender bag built to match your style and intended activity. Leather, ballistic nylon, high-denier ripstop polyester, and waxed canvas are all common options.

A weekender bag has space enough for my few changes of clothes, my dopp kit with all my toiletries, my electronics (phone charger, laptop, iPad to read on the go), and all the other essentials I pack for my two-to-four-day trip. Not a big, bulky suitcase, but a sleek, stylish bag I can throw in the back of the car or use as a carry-on for a quick trip.

In the pursuit of finding the perfect travel companion, I’ve tested as many bags as I could get my hands on, talked to all my frequent-traveling buddies, and combed through tons of product reviews.

Based on that research and testing, I’ve assembled a list of the best weekender travel duffle bags—the perfect blend of stylish looks and practical design.

Best Overall

Solo Leroy Rolling Duffel

Why did I choose it?

Sturdy enough to survive years of adventure travel, wheeled so it’s easy to pull through the airport, and with all the space I need for a trip up to 10 days, this bag is exactly what I look for in a weekender duffel bag.

Best Overall

Solo Leroy Rolling Duffel

$142

For guys who just can’t be bothered to carry their duffel bag, say hello to the Solo Leroy Rolling Duffel.

This duffel bag features a telescoping handle and rolling wheels that make it insanely easy to carry anywhere you go, no matter how full or heavy it may be.

My wife has actually staked a claim to this bag because it’s large enough (49L of storage space) to fit all her clothes, multiple pairs of shoes, toiletry kit, hair dryer, makeup kit, electronics, and everything else she packs for our trips. And all she has to do is roll it through the airport, easy peasy.

The bag is tough but still looks stylish, with an “urban-savvy” design that captures the spirit of Lower Manhattan while still being rugged enough for the great outdoors.

And for guys (like me) who like to separate their laundry (or shoes) from their clothes, the unique design features a dedicated, expandable compartment perfect for the task. I’ve used this bag for almost 2 years now and absolutely love it.

Best Leather Duffle

Kodiak Leather 30L Weekender Duffel

$269

I took one look at this leather bag and instantly fell in love! Not only was the color utterly gorgeous from the moment I started using it, but after 2+ years of traveling with it, the more eye-catching and rich the patina has become. Now, it’s a piece of luggage I’m proud to show off as I strut through the airport.

The buffalo leather is tough enough to survive a rough outback Jeep ride, and the heavy duty nylon liner offers excellent protection for my clothing/items and easy storage solutions in the main compartment, back wall zip pocket, phone pocket, and card/pen holders.

Thanks to the two exterior pockets, I can keep my most utilized items (passport, driver’s license, and card holder wallet) and phone charger close at hand for instant access.

Best Duffle that Packs Flat

Bellroy Lite Duffle

$129

With the Bellroy Lite Duffle, you’ve got the perfect blend of light weight and reliability. The cordura nylon exterior is tough and rugged, but weighs far less than you’d expect from a 30-liter bag.

It’s designed to be folded or rolled down small enough to fit in any suitcase or backpack, perfect for taking on that weekend shopping spree trip. But it’s also hardy and reliable, a bag as at home in a pitched tent as a 5-star resort.

The main compartment is wonderfully spacious and offers plenty of storage space for everything you’ll need to pack for your weekend away, and the many internal and external pockets make keeping all your precious items organized incredibly easy. And compared to many of the other bags on this list, it’s a nicely affordable choice.

Best Inexpensive Duffle

Herschel Novel Duffle

$62

If you’re the kind of guy who always has to have that perfect pair of shoes with you on any trip, this is the bag for you.

It’s designed with a specialized, dedicated shoe compartment that protects your prized shoes from getting crushed by the weight of your clothing, and shields them from the elements and rough handling.

The interior also makes organization easy, thanks to the mesh storage sleeve and large main compartment. Grab it by the reinforced handle or sling that padded strap over your shoulder, and you’re ready for any trip—be it business or pleasure.

Mission Workshop Transit Duffle

$295

This duffle bag by Mission Workshop is one of my top picks thanks to both its size and solid construction.

It’s built to be “weatherproof”, meaning it can handle any rain, snow, sleet, hail, or blistering sunshine you may encounter at your travel destination.

The combination of a HT500 nylon exterior and TPU-coated 140/70 nylon interior makes it a long-lasting bag I’m glad I’ve had with me in some of the worst weather I’ve faced—from Hawaii rain storms to Canadian blizzards.

Its interior pocket is sized to fit a laptop up to 15.5”, and everything from the zippers to the seams are coated with water-resistant treatments to keep out the damp.

And you’ll never have to worry about the straps snapping on you, because they’re ultra-tough MilSpec webbing that is more than capable of enduring any rough handling.

Best Duffle to Pair with a Private Jet

BERLUTI Jour Off Leather Travel Bag

$4550

For the gentleman who knows what he wants and has the money to spend on premium quality, it doesn’t get better than this. Made from one-of-a-kind Venezia leather, every bag is unique, with its own glossy finish that will only grow richer and more varied as it develops a patina over the years.

The size is just right for that quick getaway, and the look screams “private jet” or “yachting weekend”. It’s so classy it even comes with its own dust bag so you can safely store it in your closet or cupboard.

Best Upscale Weekender

Harber London Leather Weekender Bag

$1300

Looking for a bag that sets you apart from every other weekend traveler? This gorgeous leather bag is just the ticket.

Handmade from fine full grain leather by expert Spanish craftsmen, this bag looks as luxurious as it feels, and will grow more gorgeous over time as the leather develops the patina from regular use.

It’s scratch-resistant and ultra-tough (as all leather is), and features plenty of extra storage, both internal and external. It’s sized for most cabin requirements, and you can trust that anyone who sees you hauling this bag on board the plane won’t be able to take their eyes off its beauty.

lundi Wilson Weekender

$654

Form and function harmonize beautifully in this weekender bag, one of the best-looking and most practical bags around.

The exterior is crafted from full grain leather with semi-vegetable tanning, with smooth leather accents that make it stand out from the crowd. On the inside, you’ve got a pure polyester canvas lining that protects your belongings and adds an extra layer of durability and odor-resistance.

The bag also has an insane number of pockets: a computer pocket (sized for up to 15” laptops), a dedicated cable pocket, two soft accessory pockets, two neoprene pockets for your phone and battery, two business card pockets, a flat outside pocket to store your travel documents and IDs, and two independent external pockets for laundry and/or shoes.

Steele & Borough Weekenderbag

$224

Built using tough nylon, it’s water-resistant and tough as nails. The addition of P.E.T.A.-approved vegan leather gives it a pop of color and elegance, plus the durability necessary to make this your go-to weekender bag for years to come.

On the inside, the spacious main compartment is complemented by a small zipper pocket for your precious electronics and a large open pocket for socks, underwear, and other compact items. The minimalist simplicity of its design makes it all the more practical and stylish, a bag you’ll love hauling with you on any and every adventure.

Bennet Winch Weekender

$1300

No one could ever argue that this is a cheap weekender bag, but if you’re willing to pay the higher-than-average price tag, you can trust that this bag will easily last for decades of weekend trips.

The exterior is 24-ounce British dyed and bonded waterproof cotton canvas, the same type of fabric used for military rucksacks. The pure cotton lining adds a wonderful softness that will shield the contents of the bag from impact and damage, as well as damp and mildew.

The military-grade cotton webbing handles are tough as nails, and you’ll find the leather accents (trim, handles, and base) give it that pop of style you are guaranteed to love. Thanks to its concealed external passport/phone pocket and cushioned internal tech/tablet pocket, all your most important possessions will be protected.

Mack Weldon Ion Weekender

$228

Keep your carry-on simple and stylish with this Mack Weldon bag.

Sized just right for a weekend getaway to the beach, boardwalk, or island resort, it’s spacious enough to accommodate all of my (admittedly large XL-sized) clothes and the tech I need to work on the go, but compact enough that I have no trouble fitting it into the overhead compartments on an airplane or train.

The eight exterior and interior compartments offer such easy organization of all my gear, and I can fiddle with the duffel straps to adapt them for the most comfortable carrying position.

One major selling point for me is the anti-odor silver interior lining. Its odor-resistance does a great job of keeping my clothes smelling fresh all weekend long, and the bag still smells fresh when I pull it out of my closet after months of disuse.

Bradley Mountain Ranger Duffle

$465

Heading out into the wild or planning to see the European continent by train? Wherever you take the Bradley Mountain Duffel, you can trust that it’ll stand up to hardcore adventures and still look dashingly handsome in the process.

Crafted from waxed duck canvas and finished with harness leather and sturdy, antique-looking brass and copper, it’s a wonderful blend of durability and style.

The 42L volume gives you plenty of storage space for all your travel essentials, and the addition of interior and exterior pockets makes organizing your documents, chargers, and compact accessories a breeze. The addition of a removable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry however feels most comfortable for you.

Filson RIPSTOP NYLON PULLMAN

$315

As much as I love a leather weekender duffel, I’ve found this Filson weekender bag delivers what I need for more active travel. It’s built using an ultra-light ripstop nylon that is as tough as it is versatile.

The 500-denier cordura nylon used for the bag’s exterior is supremely tough, resistant to abrasion, punctures, and tears. It’s even double-treated to max out water-resistance—the perfect bag for wet, rainy conditions. I’ve taken this bad boy camping in pouring rain and on a weekend-long kayaking trip, and it holds up beautifully well.

It hangs in just the right position against my hip so that it’s comfortable and easy to carry anywhere I go, and I love that I can wear it as a backpack thanks to the removable, contoured, padded straps.

When packing and unpacking, the clamshell-style opening makes it easy for me to see everything inside the main compartment at a glance, and the variety of buckling straps and pockets inside the bag allows me to keep everything organized with military precision.

Rains Weekend Bag

$140

For that quick getaway, sling the Rains Weekend Bag over your shoulder and get ready for fun!

It’s designed to look and function like your favorite gym bag, but it’s so much more elegant and practical than some slubby duffle. The sturdy polyurethane-coated fabric looks stylish and offers excellent protection against water, and the matte hardware and coated zipper will add just the right contrast to its look.

It uses a lot of webbing—both in the handles and shoulder strap, as well as the compression at each end—so you know it’s a tough, hardy bag that can handle the rigors of any trip.

WP Standard PanAm Duffle Bag

$449

For an elegant weekend vacation in New York or a quick European holiday via train, the WP Standard Duffle is the bag you should consider.

Made from pure full-grain leather, it’s gorgeous from the get-go, but will become a truly unique work of art as it patinates over time and with regular use.

The addition of a heavy-duty 2-way zipper and solid brass hardware (for the handles and snaps) ensures it can withstand years of frequent travel and rough handling without wearing down. Plus, it’s backed by a Lifetime Guarantee.

On the inside, it’s a simple bag: one spacious compartment for all your belongings, and one interior pocket for your most important small items. It’s sized just right to use as a carry-on—it’ll fit both in the overhead compartments or under your seat.
