Bottle openers are the sort of tool you only really miss when you don’t have one.

There’s nothing that frustrates me more than realizing I can’t drink that beverage because I don’t have a simple piece of correctly-shaped metal to get it open. (Even a spoon or knife will do in a pinch, right?)

To make sure that never happens, I’ve gotten used to carrying a bottle opener with me wherever I go. I have yet to attend a pool party, backyard BBQ, or even a hangout in my own house where it didn’t come in incredibly handy. After all, it’s much easier to whip it out and deploy it than go fumbling among my kitchen utensils drawer trying to find a bottle opener.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
  • Your drinks, your way: Bottle openers can be fashioned into multi-tools, fridge magnets, key chains, or minimalist works of art. Whatever suits your style and daily use best, there’s a bottle opener built with you in mind.
  • Built tough: Typically, bottle openers will be made from stainless steel, aircraft grade aluminum, titanium, or brass, all materials that will handle regular contact with spilled and splashed beer without rusting or bending beneath the pressure of popping the metal top.
  • Worth keeping handy: Domestic beers may often be screw-top, but you’ll want to keep at least one bottle opener in your kitchen or backyard BBQ setup just in case someone brings a pop-top import.

Be smart and always carry a bottle opener with you. Thanks to the list below, you’ll never run into a situation where you can’t get your beer—or someone else’s—open in seconds.

KITCHENDAO 2 in 1 Magnetic Beer Bottle Opener

With this bad boy sitting on your fridge door, you’ll always have an easy way to open your beers. The magnetic bottle opener is designed to adhere to any metal surface, and it features the “professional bottle opener” design favored by bartenders around the country.

I love that it’s not just a beer bottle opener, but also a soda can opener (in case the pull-tab cracks on you). It’s also designed to magnetically “catch” the beer caps as I open the bottles so I don’t have to waste time chasing the caps under counters or across the lawn to collect and toss them in the trash.

Though it’s ultra-cheap, it’s proven to be a reliable and useful bottle opener that has served me well over years of regular drinking.

Best Keychain Bottle Opener

GERBER Shard Keychain Tool

I’ve been using the Gerber Shard for so long I can’t imagine my life without it. It’s the most compact, unobtrusive solution around, but also incredibly practical.

This bad boy is built from stainless steel with a titanium nitride coating that makes it incredibly durable, and features all the tools I need in my daily life—including a pry bar, small and medium flathead screwdriver, Philips head screwdriver, wire stripper, and, of course, bottle opener.

It’s compact and light enough that you can secure it to your keychain and carry it around all day long, ready to whip out and put to use at a moment’s notice. And I’ve yet to find a bottle opener that can beat the insanely low price tag.

Best Bottle Resealer

Westmark Germany Hermetus Steel 3-in-1 Resealer Beer Bottle Opener

$11

What do you do if you can’t finish your beer right away? It doesn’t happen to me often, but sometimes I get called away for some chore, or my line finally gets a bite and you’ve got to wrestle that fish onto the boat. More often, though, my wife takes a few sips then forgets to finish her drink. Should I let a good beer go to waste? Not in my house!

That’s why I really like the Hermetus Steel 3-in-1 Resealer Beer Bottle Opener. Not only does this handy little device pop open my beers, but it comes with a rubber surface that creates an airtight seal over open bottles to keep them safe and sound while I’m busy or if a drink gets forgotten. I can always come back to it, slide off the re-sealer, and enjoy it as fresh as when I first popped it open.

Made with stainless steel and high-quality rubber, it’s the tight tool for the very important job of ensuring not a single sip of beer is ever wasted.
