Whether you’re lighting up a cigarette, a camp fire, or a gas stove, a lighter will be an essential tool in your arsenal.

But say goodbye to the old-timey fuel-powered lighters, and hello to an ultra-convenient plasma electric lighter that runs on a lithium ion battery pack.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
  • Plasma lighters get super hot. The electric arc generated by the plasma lighter is much hotter than the flame generated by a standard fuel-powered lighter. Thus, they start fires faster and will work to ignite even materials with a higher ignition temperature.
  • Plasma lighters are environmentally friendly. There’s no need for fuel canisters, and no smoke is emitted as the lighter burns. It’s just an electric arc with zero emissions, powered by your standard lithium-ion batteries.
  • Plasma lighters use a USB cable for charging. Anytime the lighter runs out of juice, just plug it in to your standard wall socket or USB port, give it a few minutes (or hours), and you’ve got a “full” lighter once more.
  • Plasma lighters are windproof. They eliminate one of the more frustrating problems with standard lighters.

Below are my top picks for modern lighters that will get the job done much faster and safer, and provide you with an eco-friendly solution for lighting up anything you want.

Tuck this little lighter inside your pocket pouch or daily carry backpack, and you’ll be ready for anything. It looks (and functions) like your favorite vape pen, but generates an electric arc hot enough to start a campfire, light a cigarette, or burn a letter.

The design is fully splash and windproof, so you can take it outdoors, on your commute, and on holiday knowing full well it will keep up with your active lifestyle.

The four LED lights integrated into the side of the lighter will keep you updated on the battery’s status; when all four switch on, it’s time to plug in the USB cable and charge it.

The USB-C charging cable can be plugged right into your computer or whatever adaptor you use for your smartphones and tablets. Best of all, it’s one of the most affordable lighters on our list.

Sick and tired of struggling to light those deep-neck candles with the wicks burned all the way down to the bottom? Then you need this little plasma lighter.

The extra-long wand is designed to reach to the bottom of any deep-neck candle and set the wick alight in seconds, making it easy for you to re-use (or finish off) old candles. It’s also great for BBQ grills, fire pits, campstoves and campfires.

What’s great about this particular lighter is that it charges very quickly. When the battery is drained, just plug it into USB power, and you’ll be back in action in under an hour, with multiple days (and hundreds of uses) before you need to charge it again.

It’s also a very safe lighter; you’ll have to click it three times to activate the spark, making sure you’ll never accidentally light it up at the wrong time.

This lovely lighter will be just the thing to keep in one of your kitchen drawers for those days you need a flame in a hurry.

With more than 60 uses per charge, it’s a great backup in emergency situations or a solution to light your gas stove.

The zinc-alloy body looks gorgeous, too, and will be resistant to damage, scuffs, and scratches—perfect for storing in your utensil drawer or “everything cabinet”.

The button is easy to use, with a non-slip design that will work even if your hands are wet or slippery while cooking. The safety lock ensures that your kids won’t be able to switch it on by accident.

Not only is it sized small enough to fit in your pocket or any pocket of your backpack, but it comes with a lanyard that lets you wear the lighter around your neck, keeping it always within easy reach.

What makes this a truly useful tool, though, is the built-in flashlight with its three brightness settings (strobe, high, and low). It’s a dual-function tool that will be very handy in any outdoors situation.

Thanks to its 2-hour charge time, you can plug it into any power bank, 12v car power source, or wall plug, and it’ll be topped up and ready to use in a hurry.

If you’re all about style, this is the lighter for you. Sleek, slim, and with a gorgeous black ceramic body, it’s a lighter you’ll be proud to whip out when offering a light to a lovely lady or handsome gentleman.

But don’t think it’s all style and no substance; the lighter generates a powerful dual arc that can light any cigarette or cigar in seconds.

At 1.37 inches wide and 2.75 inches long, it’s sized perfectly for the pocket of your suit or tuxedo pants, and will be elegant enough to pair with any formal or business casual outfit.

With up to 200 uses on a single full charge and a charge time of around 90 minutes, it’s the perfect lighter to keep with you when at the office or attending social events.

For guys who want a tough-looking electric lighter they can be proud to whip out in front of their buddies, this is the perfect choice. It’s built using a sleek gunmetal and black case that will look and feel rugged, and it’s got just enough heft to be a “man’s tool”.

The lighter is easy to charge via USB power, and you get up to 300 uses before it needs to be plugged in and topped up. It’s windproof and waterproof, and the lid acts as a safety feature to prevent it from lighting up if closed.

Zippo 65828 Lighter Insert

$18

Yes, even Zippo is getting in on the plasma electric lighter game. If you’re a die-hard Zippo guy who just loves the feel and sound of opening your favorite lighter, you’ll want to give this bad boy a try.

It’s built as an insert to fit into the lighters you’ve loved and used for years, but uses an electric battery rather than a fuel canister.

The lighter comes with a 200 mAh IEC battery that gives you around 300 uses per charge, and once you connect the 5v0.2A micro USB cable, it’ll take just an hour to fully recharge.

It’s also got a safety feature where it shuts off after 10 seconds, to ensure the battery doesn’t drain too quickly or the electrodes overheat. Use it with any Zippo lighter to bring your “old trusty” into the high-tech future.

LcFun Waterproof Lighter

$10

For those hardcore hiking trips or rainy-weather camping trips when you need a lighter that can survive anything, this tough little electric lighter is exactly what you need.

It’s built with a rugged body that won’t break or get damaged when hiking, trekking, or off-roading, and it’s both wind and waterproof so you can always start a fire under any conditions. It’s even IP56 rated to ensure not a single drop of water can seep in even if the rain is pouring down.

The lighter is small enough that you can fit it into your pocket or a small compartment of your hiking backpack, and it fits comfortably in the palm of your hands even if you’re wearing gloves.

The design is also easy to grip if your hands are wet, muddy, or covered in fish guts. With 2 hours to a full charge and hundreds of uses before it needs to be plugged in, it’s an outdoorsman’s best friend.

RONXS Electric Lighter

$10

This little lighter is designed to be used safely around your house as well as campsite. It’s built with a long, flexible 360-degree rotating neck that lets you keep your hands well away from whatever you’re lighting—great for starting a BBQ fire with a bit of ignition fuel or lighter fluid to make the process easier.

The lighter comes with 600 uses on a full charge, and the built-in battery light indicator will let you know when it’s time to re-charge.

The design is compact enough to fit in your bag or camping gear, but tough enough that it will survive regular outdoor use.

It’s also fully water and windproof so you can take it with you fully confident it will handle the rigors of your trekking, cycling, or backpacking trip.

It comes with a 7-second auto-shutoff that will ensure the lighter switches off before overheating, and a “Certified Safe” battery and safety switch design. Backed by a 2-year warranty, it’s a plasma electric lighter you can trust to get the job done.

DarkEnergy Plasma Lighter

$30

The DarkEnergy lighter is built in a rugged case that will keep it from being damaged if you repeatedly drop or bump it, and the waterproof cap will both act as a safety (keeping it from lighting) and shield it from damage due to rain, snow, or being dropped into a river or lake.

Weighing in at just 2.26 ounces, it’s nicely lightweight and small enough you’ll have no trouble fitting it into your camping gear.

The light comes with a built-in flashlight and strobe light, which can be activated by the same button that switches on the lighter (when the cap is on).

Thanks to the safety latch and button, you’ll never have to worry about the lighter getting turned on accidentally when bumped in your pocket, and it’ll be safe from small and curious children, too.

Phone Skope PYRO Putty ARC Lighter

$34

Keep this lighter on hand in any emergency or outdoors situation, just to be sure you’ve always got a trusty means of starting a fire.

The lighter comes in a case that is waterproof when sealed, highly visible in the daytime (thanks to its bright orange color), and even glows bright green in the dark. No more fumbling for matches if the power shuts off in your house or the campfire dies at night; you’ll always know where this bad boy is.

In addition to the plasma lighter, it also includes a storage compartment for ¼-ounce of Pyro Putty, perfect for making sure you can start a fire in even adverse conditions.

With 300 strikes per battery charge and an LED light letting you know it’s time to plug the lighter in, it’s a truly convenient tool you’ll be glad you’ve got close at hand in any situation.

How Does an Electric Lighter Work?

A plasma electric lighter works by using electricity to create an electrical arc between two metal contact points (electrodes) on the lighter.

Instead of burning fuel to generate a fire, the electric lighter battery generates a continuous electrical arc that flows between the two contact points. Touch that arc to the material you want to kindle, and you’ve got yourself a flame in a matter of seconds.

Best of all, because it’s using an electrical charge—ionized particles in the air between the electrodes—they are essentially “windproof”, as well as flameless, safer, and more environmentally friendly.

How Long Do Electric Lighters Last Between Charges?

The battery life on an electric lighter will vary depending on the model and prolonged use (more than 5 seconds of sustained use will drain the battery faster). However, based on the various options I’ve collected for our list below, you can expect to get hundreds of uses (200 to 800) before needing to recharge the battery.
