Grand Seiko Introduces Watches Inspired by the Japanese Katana Sword

For connoisseurs of Japanese watchmaking, the “Katana” by Grand Seiko is a must-have. After all, it’s inspired by the Japanese katana, and you can feel the reverence for the iconic steel weapon in every aspect of its design.

The 40mm watch case is built using a high-polished finish that emulates the intense labor that goes into crafting a katana. Each model features some element of the katana-making process: the SBGA489’s black dial draws on the dark steel used for the sword’s outer sharp edge, the SBGA491’s green dial is inspired by the strong inner core of the blade, and the SBGA493’s deep-red-and-gold colors are evocative of the blade being heated during the forging process.

Thanks to this construction—along with its 100m water resistance and Spring Drive Caliber 9R65 movements—the watch is as tough as it is beautiful.
